Making a Difference, One Neighbor at a Time

The La Mesa Woman’s Club was pleased to welcome Lynn Parsons, a leader and volunteer with the Fresh Start program at La Mesa First United Methodist Church, for a presentation about this important local outreach effort serving neighbors experiencing homelessness at our October general meeting.  The club has been a supporter of the Fresh Start program for many years.

Her presentation offered members an opportunity to learn more about Fresh Start and other opportunities to provide support.

More Than a Meal

Fresh Start is a monthly community outreach program operated through La Mesa First United Methodist Church. On the last Saturday of each month, volunteers welcome neighbors in need and provide services that help address immediate, everyday challenges.

These services include a hot breakfast, take-away lunches, hot showers, personal care items, clothing, and other assistance. The program also helps connect guests with additional community resources.

But Fresh Start offers more than basic necessities. It creates a place where people can gather, share a meal, talk with others, and experience a sense of belonging.

Rather than simply distributing food, volunteers make time to sit with guests and share breakfast around tables. This personal connection helps foster a welcoming environment in which people are recognized as individuals, not defined by their circumstances.

The Power of Volunteers and Community Partnerships

Lynn Parsons and her husband, Jim, have helped coordinate the Fresh Start program and its growing network of volunteers. Their work demonstrates how a community can respond to local needs through consistent service and a willingness to help.

Fresh Start also benefits from partnerships that connect guests with additional resources. Collaboration with local service providers, including La Mesa’s Homeless Outreach and Mobile Engagement (HOME) program, can help individuals explore support and housing-related services.

The program’s growth reflects the increasing need for these services and the generosity of community members who contribute their time, energy, supplies, and financial support.

A Mission That Reflects Our Club’s Values

Learning about Fresh Start gave members a closer look at how a local program can address immediate needs while creating connections that help people feel welcomed and valued.

The La Mesa Woman’s Club thanks Lynn Parsons for sharing the story of Fresh Start.  We look forward to continuing our support of this program.

Together, we can strengthen our community—one neighbor, one act of kindness, and one fresh start at a time.
